Jung called them the inherited grammar of the psyche. Whether or not we accept the metaphysics, the patterns keep arriving.
The Mother. The Trickster. The Threshold. The Wise Fool. Every century believes it has invented new stories, and every century finds the same figures walking through them in new costumes.
You do not have to be a Jungian to notice the pattern. You only have to read widely, or watch enough films, or listen to enough people describe their own dreams. The archetypes are less a theory and more a weather report on the human interior.
