There is a temptation, in any work touching symbolism, to reach for the dramatic. Ancient secrets. Hidden knowledge. Answers withheld. This is mystification, and it costs the reader their intelligence.
Mystery is the opposite. Mystery is a well-lit room with an unmeasurable ceiling. It says: here is what we know, here is what we suspect, and here is the honest edge of both. Only one of these two attitudes leaves the reader freer than it found them.
