Long before we speak a decision, the body has already begun to make it. Reading gesture is reading thought in its earliest form.
The Latin manus gives us manuscript, manual, manner. To handle something is, quite literally, to think with the hand. Neuroscience now agrees with the poets: motor regions of the brain light up before language does.
In Renaissance painting, the placement of a single finger could carry an entire theology. In modern conversation, the timing of a gesture reveals what the sentence hides. Manus Initium asked: what if a deck of cards were built entirely of gestures?
